Have you always wanted to learn karate but just can’t find the time?
Funnily enough, you’re not alone. If I had a fiver for every time I’ve heard this, I’d probably be a rich man. With that said, I do understand it takes a big commitment to study a martial art and ultimately it’s not for everyone. However, I always advise people to give it a try as there are so many benefits to learning a martial art, far too many to start listing here, so if you are thinking of learning a martial art then please give it a go. There are plenty of local martial arts clubs out there, some good, some not so good. My advice to you is to do your research, find a good club and reputable instructor that fits your requirements, get in contact with them or simply turn up to a class. Hopefully, you won’t look back!
But what if I simply don’t have the time but want to learn some techniques to protect myself?
As stated above, I would always advise learning a martial art like what we do if at all possible as I believe that practice and repetition is the key. However, if this is not possible then there is definitely some benefit in attending a good self-defense/self-protection course. Just ensure that the course is well put together and run by a reputable instructor. Most people can spare a few hours on a Saturday afternoon so this is often a good way to gain some understanding of self-protection. If you are considering attending a self-protection course then please ensure it covers the following aspects as a minimum:
- Key points on the law surrounding self-protection
- Environmental and self-awareness
- The 4 different stages of self-protection
- Use of body language and dialogue
- Correct mindset
- Simple, effective techniques that work under pressure
The above list is not exhaustive but in my opinion, would be sufficient in providing a good basis for you to learn a little more about self-protection.
